Embrace the Hip Hop Attitude with Felix Lim
All That Jazz Dance Academy’s newest addition to the family, Felix Lim, teaches Hip Hop dance classes for students aged 5 to adults. His interest in dance began at a really young age when he began learning choreography from children’s dance videos on his own and performed them in his cradle.
We learn more about Felix’s passion for dance, in particular, the Hip Hop style and what he hopes to achieve with his students at our academy.
How did your dance journey start and what made you decide to teach dance?
Once during my primary school years, I saw a Britney Spears music video and was really inspired by the desire to be “one of them” on TV. Then came the reality show “So You Think You Can Dance”. I think that was what really pushed me to want to start dancing. Around the age of 14, I started with Street Jazz and Hip Hop. I took Krump for a while but that didn’t turn out too well so I stopped not long after haha! After enrolling in a school for the arts, I started my Theatre Jazz, Tap, and Ballet training. In the recent years, I have also started exploring Jazz Funk.
I decided to take on teaching because, after almost a decade of learning dance, I feel like it is time for me to start giving back. Other than that, I believe being able to teach dance is also an important skill to have as a performer because, in the process of teaching someone else, you will also be reminding yourself about the details or basic techniques that may sometimes be overlooked when performing. I believe it is a win-win situation for both the teacher and the students.
What’s your favourite thing about teaching dance?
The challenge! Teaching and performing dance are two different skills. I am always up for a challenge and I definitely find teaching to be one. It requires me to think of different choreographies for each class. It also challenges me to think and structure the class so as to suit the varying levels of the students’ proficiency in dance techniques. Of course, at the end of the day when I see my students grow as dancers and executing choreography beautifully and confidently, it just makes me so proud!
What drew you to Hip Hop as a dance style?
From looking at all the music videos and dance shows on TV, especially the MTV channel back in the day. I always aspired to be able to dance like one of them.
Which dancers are you most inspired by and why?
I’m inspired not only by Hip Hop dancers but by dancers of other styles as well. Brian Friedman, Yanis Marshall, the unstoppable duo that is Janelle Ginestra and Wildabeast Adams, Matt Steffanina, Al Blackstone, Richard J. Hinds, and The Nicholas Brothers just to name a few. All of them aren’t afraid to express themselves and the dynamics they have in their dance are just captivating. The way they dance and create is so inspiring and pushes me to want to step out of my comfort zone even more. I aspire to be able to reach their level someday!
Who is best suited to learn Hip Hop dance?
Hip Hop dance is suitable for everyone. Just come on down for class and have fun. As long as you aren’t afraid to look silly and have fun, all you need is the attitude!
What are the benefits of learning Hip Hop dance?
I would say personally that after learning Hip Hop dance, I became less reserved about expressing myself both vocally or physically. It opens you up and challenges your comfort zones, especially if you are a shy person like I am. Also, Hip Hop dancing is a great cardio workout! It’s a fun way to exercise and it beats running on the treadmill in the gym hands down.
What’s your teaching style like and what can students expect from your classes?
I do my best to cater to all levels but at the same time, I also like to challenge my students to step out of their comfort zones. The only thing that matters to me is that you try your best. Most importantly, we’ll have lots of fun!
What made you decide to join us and what do you hope to achieve for your students?
I feel that All That Jazz Dance Academy is really determined to push and train your students to have the technique and abilities needed to pursue a career in dance. I feel really grateful to be a part of this family and hope that I can play a part in helping the students become the best performers they can be!
